BetterScreenTime was founded on a simple principle: children deserve an inspiring, educational digital experience free from behavioral tracking, addictive algorithms, and invasive surveillance.
Our Family Safety Guarantees
1. Scope & Relationship to Children
BetterScreenTime ("we", "our", or "the Service") provides a multi-platform family application suite (including Android, iOS, Android TV, Windows, WebApp, and our Parent Web Portal). Our application is designed to be set up, configured, and governed exclusively by parents, legal guardians, or authorized educators ("Parent" or "You").
We strictly adhere to the United States Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA"), the General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR" - Article 8 regarding processing of children's data), and relevant global child privacy frameworks.
2. Information We Collect
We minimize data collection to the absolute operational minimum:
A. Parental Account Data (via Google OAuth)
When you sign in as a parent via Google Authentication, we receive your Google email address, display name, and unique authentication identifier. We do not store or have access to your Google password.
B. Child Profiles (Parent Created)
Parents may create child profiles by providing an arbitrary nickname or first name and choosing an avatar or age range. We do NOT require or collect dates of birth, social security numbers, physical addresses, biometric measurements, or photos.
C. Curated Playlists & Whitelisted URLs
We store the URLs of YouTube videos and playlists that you explicitly choose to whitelist, along with public metadata (such as video titles, thumbnails, and channel names resolved via standard oEmbed).
D. Master PIN & Security Hashes
If you configure a 4-digit Master PIN to lock settings, it is hashed securely and stored for access verification. It cannot be read in plaintext by our team.
3. What We Explicitly DO NOT Collect
- No child location tracking: We do not collect GPS, Wi-Fi location, or fine geolocation data.
- No camera or microphone capture: Our applications do not record audio, video, or photos of your children.
- No behavioral ad tracking: We never share child identifiers with ad networks, data brokers, or marketing partners.
- No biometric data: We do not collect facial geometry, fingerprints, or voice prints.
4. Third-Party Video Streaming & YouTube API Services
BetterScreenTime enables playback of curated educational content by embedding approved YouTube videos using standard, sandboxed player controls provided by YouTube API Services.
By using BetterScreenTime to stream YouTube videos, you acknowledge that video delivery is governed by the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
BetterScreenTime does not download, rip, or re-host YouTube video files, ensuring intellectual property rights and creator attribution remain fully intact.
5. Data Security & Storage
Your playlists, child nicknames, and parent configurations are stored securely in a managed Supabase PostgreSQL instance protected by Row Level Security (RLS). This means:
- Only your authenticated parent account can read or modify your curated lists.
- All data in transit is encrypted using modern TLS (Transport Layer Security).
- Data at rest is encrypted in industry-standard ISO/IEC 27001 certified data centers.
6. Parental Rights, Data Access & Deletion
Parents have absolute control over their account data. At any time, you have the right to:
Review Data
Inspect all child profiles, playlists, and added links directly inside the Web Portal.
Instant Deletion
Delete child profiles or entire playlists with a single click in your portal settings.
Account Purge
Request complete permanent erasure of your account and related records by contacting support.
7. Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to how we collect or process parental or child information, we will notify you through prominent in-app notices and by updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this page.
